Anglers Add $2 Billion to State Economy - See full report    Read story here

Mt. Shasta Area

This part of the state, in Northeast California, is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Triangle" by anglers because of its many fish-filled watersheds. But more critically, the area is home to the headwaters of the Sacramento River - perhaps the most important watershed in the state. Covering 27,000 square miles, it is one of the largest watersheds in the U.S. and serves as an important source of drinking water and recreation as well as a vital economic artery for commerce and agriculture.

Protecting the Golden Triangle, therefore, isn't just about preserving great angling, it's about protecting California's most critical waterway.

But, in 1991, the unthinkable happened. A Southern Pacific freight train carrying toxic chemicals jumped the track, fell into the Sacramento and spilled 19,000 gallons of the toxic compound Metam Sodium. Nearby towns had to be evacuated and all aquatic life was wiped out for nearly 40 miles of the river.

Today the area is back to what it once was -- one of the state's most beautiful angling spots. But the danger remains.

Because rail safety is a top priority for CalTrout, we are working with other groups to amend the Federal Railroad Safety Act to allow the state to regulate dangerous sections of railroad track.

In addition to rail safety, CalTrout is working on creek restoration projects and ensuring water flows below major dams.

California Trout also maintains two educational properties in the region. Our Trout Camp is located on a section of the Upper Sacramento River. And our Fall River property is open to the public and features an information kiosk.

Because of the importance of the watersheds of this region, this pocket will remain a high priority.
