VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

CalTrout, Our Wild Fish and You.

A lot of folks ask us how they can help our state's beleaguered wild fish above and beyond their donations. For this reason, CalTrout has put together a wide array of volunteer gatherings.  Our two major annual volunteer activities are the Golden Trout Project and Trout Day at Lake Merced in San Francisco. We always need volunteers for these two summer events. In addition we schedule other events throughout the year and mobilize members, clubs and others to advocate on behalf of wild trout. Unfortunately, we are not always able to give people a lot of lead time as we don't always have the luxury of an advanced warning.  Please check back to this page to see new volunteer announcements.

Golden Trout Project - Summer

California Trout, Trout Unlimited (TU), and the Federation of Flyfishers (FFF) are assisting the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in a collaborative effort to protect and restore the California Golden Trout.

Volunteers events take place throughout the summer months in Inyo and Sequoia National Forests and Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Parks in the southern Sierra. All of the activities entail rugged, outdoor activity -- and some entail rigorous backpacking and/or hiking in the high country. In all cases volunteers provide their own transportation to the trip starting point and their own camping, fishing, outdoor gear and food.

Check out this year's schedule.  Then take a moment to fill out this from (remember, first come, first served).

Before filling out the form make sure you have read the project descriptions and planned activities to determine which volunteer opportunity best suits your interests.

Please note: If you participate in any activities you will be required to sign a liability waiver form and a CDFG Volunteer Service Agreement. If you are going to fish, a current CA Fishing license is required as well. We will take care of all other required permits.

Please submit a separate registration form for each family member or each individual in your group.

Dates and locations may change.  Flexibility is required.  Volunteers will be contacted and informed of any changes to the trip itinerary. We will do everything possible to communicate specific times and locations to all volunteers in a timely fashion.

Forms: It is required that every volunteer register for all of these activities. It will also be necessary to fill out special release forms for the time you are working on the project.

Trout Day at Lake Merced

For the past three years, Caltrout has worked with Department of Fish and Game, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, the Friends of Lake Merced, Fishing in the City and others to instill the love of fish and fishing to the next generation of conservationists and publicize our successful efforts to restore what was once called "the finest urban fishery in the country".

By the early part of this decade, San Francisco's Lake Merced was in dire straights. Its water level had dropped to 9 feet (from an historic 23 feet), tule weeds choked the bank and fishing had all but disappeared. But today the lake is nearly full and fishing has returned.

Trout Day features a kid's fishing clinic, free equipment, gifts, information booths and more. Over 1500 people turned out in 2005 and we expect more in 2006, so we need your help. If you're interested in volunteering for this September event, please contact us at info@caltrout.org.
