Projects/Programs

Recovery and Restoration Projects

  • Currently working with United Water and resource agencies to implement a fish passage solution at the Vern Freeman Diversion and the Santa Felicia Dam.
  • With funding from the Ventura Coastkeeper, studied the effects of sediment transport following the hypothetical removal of the Vern Freeman Diversion – a study, which will inform restoration activities in the watershed for many years to come.
  • Laid additional groundwork for the successful completion of other restoration opportunities in the Santa Clara watershed.
  • Pursued funding through the California Department of Fish & Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grants Program to fund a Watershed-wide Monitoring Proposal: This project is a wide-ranging monitoring program that will oversee and enumerate adult steelhead upstream migration, out-migrant steelhead smolts and over-summer fry and juvenile steelhead rearing; throughout sections of Santa Clara River and its major tributaries. This data is critical and will inform all future restoration activities in the watershed.
  • Secured funding through the Santa Clara River Trustee Council and California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response to fund The Harvey Diversion Fish Passage Restoration Project. The Project will elevate and stabilize the creek bed 900’ below the Diversion to restore fish passage for the endangered Southern California steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) at a pre-existing fish ladder. A separate monitoring component will measure the success of the Project. In addition, the Project will provide vocational and educational opportunities for members of the California Conservation Corps and Hispanic students in the greater-Ventura area. In the second phase of the project, the diversion would be notched to create a natural appearing fish channel that will facilitate fish passage without the need for a fish ladder.
  • The Nature Conservancy has submitted a Fisheries Restoration Grant Program application entitled “Juvenile Steelhead Population and Habitat Assessment”. If funded, the study will focus on the mainstem of the Santa Clara River to: (1) assess the population status of juvenile steelhead by conducting population surveys, and (2) assess the quantity and quality of rearing habitat for juvenile steelhead.
  • Wishtoyo and its Ventura Coastkeeper Program’s 2013 FRGP proposal is a Santa Clara River Estuary Habitat Restoration & Enhancement Feasibility Study that would result in a Santa Clara River Estuary restoration and management plan. The overarching purpose of this restoration project at 100% design would be to provide a minimum of 15 – 25 acres of enhanced and additional Southern California Steelhead habitat at the Santa Clara River Estuary through relocation of a portion of the McGrath State Beach Campground down beach, and the restoration of the campground to estuarine lagoon, side channel, contiguous wetlands, and contiguous upland riparian habitat.

Environmental Education

  • On April 10, 2013; CalTrout participated in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair at Ventura County Campground. Approximately 1000 youth with STEM vocations were introduced to the Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition; as well as careers in conservation that require a STEM education.

Community Outreach

  • The Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition is participating in the California Coastal Commission’s 29th Annual Coastal Clean Up Day on September 21, 2013. The SCRSC has selected the Ventura Promenade site due to its proximity to the Santa Clara River estuary and the Ventura River estuary.  Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition participants will learn how estuaries play a vital role in the steelhead trout’s life history. Santa Clara River Steelhead Coalition participants will also learn how steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are rainbow trout that exhibit an anadramous (i.e., migrating to and from the ocean) life history.
  • The SCRSC has been selected as the beneficiary for Patagonia funding from the annual Ventura Salmon Run to put towards the Coalition’s communications and future outreach activities. The Patagonia Salmon Run will be on Sunday, November 10, 2013. The SCRSC will have an exhibition and will be screening Against All Odds – a awareness raising video about southern California steelhead.
  • Water Talks ** Coming soon! CalTrout and the Coalition are in the planning stages for Water Talks – presentations by prominent experts on a range of water-related issues affecting the local community.
